I picked up this record at one of the Silkworm reunion shows and let it stare at me for weeks, months, daring me to give a listen.
Mint Mile is led by my good friend, Tim Midyett and I told him when I purchased it that it was going to take time and he laughed because he knows. This record holds an immense amount of weight as it was engineered by our good friend Steve at Studios de la Fabrique in France. The session became part of our text thread, all of us getting the goofy play by play and getting to bask in the joy of Steve doing what he did and working with someone whom he loved so very much. He seemed really happy! Even with a nightmare trip back home, he was cheerful. He texted from the airport

Steve passed away a few days later. It’s been a year and a half but it still stings, and staring at that record cover sitting in my living room, it’s been a trip back to the void. A record sleeve holding a lot of pain.
A few weeks ago I finally decided to see if I could handle it. While the first song dragged me down, once again sensing how beautiful it sounded, another example of Steve going above and beyond when it was his friends (I wrote about this in detail here.)
Somber, beautiful music. This music is Tim. It really is. He sounds so comfortable and it is a pure inspiration.
Usually I like to listen to records that I write about by just putting the music on and typing my interpretation as quickly as possible. In this case, I don’t know why, I couldn’t type. I think I was too overwhelmed with the adrenaline rush of facing this listen and the emotional toll of the songs. What I turned to was voice notes. I wanted to capture something and that just happened without thinking.
Rather than try to make sense of what I said, I’m just going to post it all as close to verbatim as possible (my voice is drowned out by the music at times).
I give you my voice note review of andwhichstray:
- Um, one just like Uzeda, you can really hear how much he loved these people, the tremendous stereo drums..and…also reminded of about a year ago I bought a 12 string guitar because about a year ago I saw Mint Mile play and hearing it and it was so good…this is so good, they use it so well and Tim has never sung any better, he sounds like, I don’t even know what he sounds like, that’s a tremendous statement meant as a compliment: I don’t know what this sounds like.
- I almost had a Wire meets the Rolling Stones vibe and now I’m…on a black road almost as if the Wallflowers actually listened to Joy Division, with the bass chords (Editors note: by this point in time, I’m pretty high)
- At times when Tim gets more aggravated it gets higher and higher and it kind of reminds me of Issac from the Arrivals with his unique way of emoting, it’s delicious (Editors note: the Arrivals were the best Chicago punk band of my era and I need to do a deep dive for the site)
- The horns are Joel R Phelps, and there is a deep effect on it that kind of makes it sound like a Casio keyboard, hah, but the performance is incredible and compliments the song so well. It almost reminds of Mulholland Drive, at Club Silencio and the guy is talking and miming a horn, and thats what this sounds like, it’s so out there, it’s spooky. It’s fantastic.
FIVE STARS!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU TIM
